From the Chair

As many of you will be aware, I was unable to attend ITC this year, but we are able to include a brief report courtesy of our vice-chair, Heiko Ehrenberg.

A recurring issue for the SJTAG group is how we can best reach out to the potential "customers" for a standard and get them involved. To that end, we are considering some different activities for ITC 2013, and possibly some other venues.

ITC 2012

Description: ITC 2012

ITC was once again held in the Disneyland complex in Anaheim, California and is set to return there in 2013.

Attendance was generally in line with 2011 levels although exhibitor participation was up by around 14% on the previous year. As is usual for ITC there was a good standard of papers presented, and while many of the technical presentations were perhaps "chip-centric" it was notable that many of the people touring the exhibit floor had interests in the board and system levels of test.

Traffic by the posters, including our SJTAG poster, was generally quite light and, with a few exceptions, most people seemed to be casually browsing rather than expressing distinct interest in what was on offer. From this point of view, we might conclude that the poster sessions do not attract nearly the same level of interest that a full paper presentation does.

While we are unable to comment on the attendance at other Fringe Meetings we have to say that the turnout for the SJTAG was something of a disappointment. Past indicators suggest that this is a general problem and is understandable, as most people attend ITC to learn from the technical presentations, so attending meetings must seem like a poor alternative.

Considering the situation with both the Poster and the Fringe Meeting, the SJTAG group is now considering additional, or perhaps alternative, ways to present itself at future ITCs. We have previously run a tutorial that was quite well received so we are considering updating that. Another suggestion is for a Panel session: That is an interesting proposition and could prove to be very informative for us, however it would also be a challenge to organize. You may have other suggestions. If so, please get in touch with us.
