From the Chair

It seems like only a few weeks ago I was commenting on ITC 2010, but as you'll see below we're already thinking about this year's event. Of course, the slightly earlier date this year has shortened the interval between events.

A discussion on devices that may exhibit multiple personalities (i.e. BSDLs) within a single design obviously struck a chord with our members as it resulted in an upsurge in attendance on our weekly calls! I suspect that a lot of discussion we have on the dynamic aspects of JTAG within system testing may be a little difficult to grasp, but this case is clearly more tangible and also has a direct relevance for board test. It's these kind of simple examples that help to illustrate our problem domain and show people why they should care about SJTAG, so I thank Brad for bringing this subject up.

Multiple BSDLs

The Multiple BSDL Problem

During our most recent meetings, we have been exploring a particular problem scenario that is of particular significance to SJTAG but has consequences across many other JTAG related standards.

Conventionally, for a given device part number, JTAG tooling will associate a single BSDL file with all occurences of that part number within the design. However, the situation can arise in system level testing where, for example, two identical FPGAs exist within the design, but in one test case both devices are required to be unconfigured while in another case one device is configured and second is unconfigured, requiring different BSDL descriptions for each.

This is a particular instance of various dynamic changes to the design that can occur during system test that are difficult to capture in the CAD data, and that are not handled well by existing tooling which largely assumes a static design.

Our recent meeting minutes will give you some insight into this problem and the challenges it creates.

ITC 2011

Following the success of the Standards Working Group posters at last year's International Test Conference, the organizers have decided to run similar sessions during ITC 2011.

The SJTAG team aims to support this activity and we anticipate that several members of the group will be in attendance during the week. As in past years, we also expect that we will hold a Fringe Meeting on SJTAG, which will be open to all who are interested in the subject.

ITC Test Week

At the time of writing, the advance program for ITC has not yet been published, but we are informed that there will be a full program of board test and system test related papers presented this year. This will provide a good "backdrop" for SJTAG and we hope it will help to attract many who may have avoided ITC in recent years as being too "chip-centric."
