From the Chair

As we send this out, most of you will be coming to the end of your Summer vacation period. I hope you all managed to find the time for an enjoyable break.

Naturally, holidays meant that we've had a more variable attendance on our weekly calls, but we've still managed to have productive meetings almost every week. In fact, we've missed only two Mondays so far this year, although we will miss the 7th September due to the US Labor Day holiday.

Our meeting schedule is shown on our Google Calendar, and is usually set one month in advance.

Teleconferencing Facilities

In July our conference call bridge service, which is kindly donated by Cisco Systems, underwent an overhaul. The Unified MeetingPlace system was withdrawn as part of a Cicso policy, and replaced by WebEx.

We have been able to use the on-line application sharing in WebEx to good effect, and from the Chair's perspective at least, it's a bonus to not only have the names of the participants on-screen, but also see an indication of who is actually speaking!

Of course, those who cannot be on-line at the meeting time and maybe need to join by cellphone are still accomodated.

Dial-in and login details are provided in the Calling Notices emailed to all Extended Working Group members prior to each meeting. Keep watching these as the meeting ID number may change from time to time.

SJTAG Use Cases

Over the past several meetings, the Group has been busy making substantial updates to the descriptions of the STJAG Use Cases. These Use Cases represent our evaluation of the various ways in which JTAG may be employed within the context of a system.

Some of these application areas may not be cases where you've considered using boundary scan: It may be that some are not applicable to your business, but it's also possible that you may be able to reap some additional benefit from your your investment in board-level JTAG.

The Use Case descriptions are available on the SJTAG wiki. Although we are still putting the final touches to one or two of the descriptions, we'd encourage you to look these over. We've tried to be honest, by recording the alternatives to JTAG-based methods, and by describing the consequences or implications of using JTAG as well as the benefits.

2009 Survey

Some of you will have been waiting on our follow-up to last Summer's SJTAG survey.

Well, it is coming, honestly. This will be a much more detailed and probing survey into the way you use JTAG now and the way you would wish to use JTAG at system-level. As a result we've had to take some time to formulate the questions to make sure we're asking about meaningful things, and are not inadvertently influencing the responses. It's important that we get honest answers; if we're not moving SJTAG forward in way that's helpful to the industry, then we want to know!

The survey is currently going through testing and final refinements prior to publication.

From last year's survey, we have a list of people who have already agreed to take part, and the survey will be available through the SJTAG website, but if you want to be added to the list of people who will get an email invitation then let us know though our Contact page.
